CAptain's Mate 4+

A dramatic improvement on earlier version, now stable on iPad and iPhone. The app is quick to download and even first login when the reports database is downloaded is quick. (As noted delete old version before downloading). Reports are only available to CA members.

There are several different ways to view and access reports, but I find map view the most useful. The app does a great job in showing your current location even on non cellular iPad provided you are in an area with wifi and have wifi on. In text view you can see all reports nearest to your current location.

All CA cruising reports are available offline and contain information you don't normally get in Almanacs and Pilot books. The CA is all about sharing information on yacht cruising. This App brings all of that information to your fingertips, just open the App whenever you have internet connection, it takes seconds to update latest reports. The App is only as good as the data so if you use it, please contribute, your local knowledge may seem trivial but to another member visiting it could be invaluable.

I've just downloaded CAptains Mate onto my iPhone 6s using my house wifi. The download was quick, and the subsequent download of the reports was also very quick. Updates come through without problem, and the functionality looks good. Changing through Title>Distance>Updated [date] is quick, and scrolling up and down is smooth. Text size is easily changed from the "Settings" menu.
All in all, an excellent way of accessing the combined knowledge of the CA's members.

This professionally produced app works well, a vast improvement over the previous version. The key point though, is the cruising and pilotage information it gives you access to. Its generally far more recent and up to date than what you can find in the pilot books - which it supplements not replaces.

Of course if you join the CA to get access to this information, you should contribute to the database by submitting updates were necessary.
