What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a mechanical engineering year-round student intern to join our team of mechanism design engineers.
Our team is responsible for the full life cycle of surety component development, production, and on-going surveillance assessment of stockpile devices.
Surety components play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear deterrent in a wide range of environments including severe accident scenarios.
These devices include electro-mechanical switching mechanisms and environmental sensing devices that involve complex mechanical interactions in assemblies of over 100 custom designed/built piece parts.
You would be expected to work in multiple phases of the product development cycle as part of a larger product realization team (PRT).
On any given day, you may be called on to: Develop design concepts using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software Participate in design down-selects Analyze designs using hand calculations, finite element analysis (FEA), and rigid body dynamics (RBD) software Develop, build, and operate laboratory test equipment Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to product design definition Conduct drawing reviews with drafting, manufacturing, and design engineers Assemble prototype and developmental hardware Review inspection results to verify product compliance with requirements Support product disposition during production through engineering analysis Develop and execute test plans and acceptance procedures Investigate anomalies and resolve through analysis and test based methods Present designs, tests results, and findings to the PRT Document work in formal reports and memos Engineers within the Advanced Mechanical Design family touch all aspects of product development, from conceptual design and analysis to system retirement.
