Every startup of mine has had one key theme in common: Consumer evolution. One of the very first businesses I launched was the UAE’s first e-commerce website. I wanted the UAE to be at the forefront of digital innovation, and after seeing Bezos launch Amazon in the late 90s, I decided that launching a similar platform in this region would be my contribution. This was in the early 2000s, when dial-up internet and a nascent e-commerce culture made it near-impossible to succeed… Let alone the challenges of trying to offer same-day delivery. Still, we launched our website in Abu Dhabi with a couple of books and CDs, and if I had to guess, we only had about 6 products. To put that into context - today, Amazon carries over 12 million SKUs. Despite the initial obstacles with contracting reliable delivery services in Abu Dhabi at that time, network issues, and countless critics - we quickly expanded our inventory to over 1000 products. 1000 became 5000 SKUs, and after that, a successful exit saw me prepare for my next project. I often think back at this time because it feels like déjà vu when I consider where I am today with Megavrse, Where we’re on the cusp of the Web3 transformation - While most people are still tethered to Web2 and reliant on the internet as we know it. The idea of shifting from a digital platform that you utilize, To a digital world that you contribute towards, own, and immerse yourself into, Seems almost as crazy as setting up an e-commerce website with few SKUs and a poor logistics network in the early 2000s. I know now what I learned back then - 6 SKUs or users can quickly turn into 1000, 5000, Then 10000. Which is why I remind myself: Change takes time, but it’s inevitable. Launched by Jonathan L. Hasson and Lara Varjabedian, serial entrepreneurs based in #dubai, UBQT helps people reconnect and brings back the “social” aspect in the current social media landscape.
