Abu Dhabi has a unique proposition to attract the right talent – and here’s why. Getting top founders to Abu Dhabi means showing them they're valued here. It's about support, not just incentives. Abu Dhabi's startup ecosystem, including Hub71, has shown promising growth. ➞ It generated $4.2 billion in value from July 1, 2021, to December 31, 2023. ➞ Abu Dhabi is MENA's fastest-growing emerging ecosystem with a growth rate of 28% annually. UAE-based fintech Ziina زينة has raised $22 million in a Series A funding round, led by US-based Altos Ventures along with other investors including FinTech Collective, Avenir, Activant Capital, Y Combinator, FJ Labs, Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), and Jabbar Internet Group. Founded in 2020 by Faisal Toukan and Sarah Toukan, Ziina helps individuals send and receive payments through its app with just a phone number, no IBAN or Swift Code required. It launched its digital wallet in February 2022. The new round will fuel Ziina’s expansion beyond a #payments solution to providing end-to-end #financial services for businesses and consumers, starting with the soon-to-launch ZiiCard. MENA: $339bn in on-chain transaction (TX) value from July'23 to June'24 gives the region a solid foundation to lead in a #DigitalAsset future. - #UAE leads the GCC with $30bn TX but Turkey tops with $137bn! - MENA TX sizes: 27% > $10m, 27% = $1-10mm, 39% = $10k - $1m, 7% <$10k Indicating a high proportion of institutional, professional, family-office + HNWI participation. - #Saudi & #UAE lead the region in DeFi. These TX account for 7.5% of global volumes. and firmly positioning MENA as a force in the #digitalassets space. Chainalysis TOO MUCH CEX v DEX? Centralized exchanges (CEXs) = the main gateway for #cryptocurrency inflows in #Qatar & Turkey but decentralized exchanges (DEX) & applications are also a sizable share - which bodes well for DeFi. ~% Share of transaction (TX) value CEX vs DEX: - Global 51% vs 28% - Qatar 64% vs 16% - Turkey 55% vs 25% - UAE 47% vs 33% - KSA 36% vs 31% #SaudiArabia's large (32mm), youthful (63% under 30) demographic are crypto-fluent, boosting participation in [advanced] DeFi activities. (24hr vol $50bn, Binance, Crypto.com, Bybit etc) STABLECOINS DOMINATE #Stablecoin (SCs)TX are significantly higher than the global avg in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE - albeit for very different reasons. ~% Share of TX value by coin type, Stablecoin / ALT / BTC / ETH: - Global 45 / 25 / 22 / 8 - Turkey 55 / 21 / 16 / 8 - UAE 51 / 24 / 17 / 8 - KSA 46 / 30 / 16 / 8 For Turkey (and other emerging nations) with a history of economic instability + high inflation, SCs provide people a much needed stores of value. The UAE & KSA have no such issues, both are USD pegged and safely anchored by $trillions of SWF + Oil assets. The growing usage of SCs likely indicates their popularity to access broader digital asset services + trading. These TXs are a key driver behind the launch of the UAE Dirham stablecoin by Tether.io + Phoenix Group. Fractional Leadership: A Global Trend Worth Exploring In my recent conversations with leaders, CEOs, and startup founders across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, one recurring theme has stood out—the increasing demand for fractional executives. In my opinion, this trend is gaining traction as organizations look for senior expertise in roles like CMO, Chief Sales Officer, or Head of HR without committing to full-time positions. The HBR IdeaCast episode, “The Growing Trend of Part-Time Executives,” dives into the topic. A remarkable insight shared is how the number of professionals identifying as fractional leaders on LinkedIn grew from just 2,000 to over 150,000 in two years! In my opinion, this shift highlights how businesses across the globe are rethinking leadership in light of cost, flexibility, and specific needs. Fractional leadership, in my view, is effective for startups or high-growth organizations that can benefit from seasoned leaders but might not have the bandwidth or resources for a full-time hire. But here’s a question: Are “fractional” roles, part-time jobs, and freelancing the same? I’m curious—would you trust your sales, marketing, or HR to a fractional leader? And for those who’ve taken on fractional roles, how do you balance multiple priorities? Thoughts?

😓 😳 Opening a bank account as a startup in the UAE has been a challenging and frustrating experience, and this is my personal account of the difficulties faced. It feels as though banks here are not genuinely interested in attracting new clients or supporting small businesses and tech startups, even when they are legally registered on the mainland, not just in free zones. One particularly disappointing example is our recent experience with Wio Bank. Despite their claims of quick and efficient account opening processes, we have been stuck in a seemingly endless loop for over three weeks, with no progress and only automated responses to our inquiries. It’s disheartening to see such a lack of support and interest from a bank that should be facilitating the growth of startups. In stark contrast, Al Maryah Community Bank has provided the best experience so far. They maintain good verbal and written communication, which is crucial for navigating these processes. However, the overall timeline for opening an account remains lengthy, even when all the required documents have been provided. One of the most significant challenges is the need for founders, who are often spread across different locations, to make multiple trips to the UAE just to sign documents or meet with bank representatives. This not only adds to the cost but also consumes valuable time without guaranteeing any success in opening an account. While the UAE continues to demonstrate leadership in the tech industry and offers an excellent ecosystem for startups, the banking system clearly lags behind the pace required for the desired progress. There needs to be a significant improvement in how banks handle account openings for new businesses to support the rapid growth and innovation in the region.
