Impressive and definitely great for the region. But you'd still question the sustainability of the business model. With all the restaurants increasing their prices on the app and still questioning the profitability, there's definitely a lot of changes that can improve the restaurants' experience. Just like how social media influencers try to build a following outside the common platforms, these restaurants try to build customer loyalty independent of talabat. I foresee a lot of startups that come up with more creative business models that will dethrone talabat and other companies like it.

Zepto raises $665 million at a $3.6 billion valuation. Here's why this raise is exciting for the Qcommerce space and startup ecosystem: Zepto's repeated fundraising success is impressive. > Pioneered the 10-minute commerce game. > Reached $1 billion GMV in under 2 years. > Founders are among the youngest in the startup world. > Built an exceptional team quickly. > Raised significant funds despite strong competition from Swiggy, Blinkit, BBNow, and others. > India is leading in aggressive Qcommerce growth. Delivery Hero, the Germany-based food delivery platform, plans to list 15 per cent of its UAE subsidiary Talabat on the Dubai bourse in the fourth quarter, as it looks to capitalise on the listing boom in the Emirates. A total of 3,493,236,093 shares, each with a nominal value of Dh0.04, will be made available in the offering, on-demand food and quick-commerce company Talabat said in its prospectus on Monday. The subscription period will open on November 19 and end on November 27 for UAE retail investors, including eligible employees of Talabat, and on November 28 for institutional investors. The retail tranche will be 5 per cent of the total shares on offer, with the remaining allocation reserved for qualified institutional investors. The offer price will be determined through a book building process during the subscription period, the company said. The State of Digital Commerce in MENA 2024 Processing volume The remarkable increase evident in consumer data is corroborated by our own transaction data in the MENA region. Indeed,Checkout.com’s total processing volume in the region has increased by 658% from the start of 2020 to December 2023. Furthermore, we continue to see growth in total processing volume year-over-year, this has reached a staggering 78% in processing volumes for the region 2023 vs 2022. This means that in the past 12 months, we have seen an even higher rate of growth than we saw in 2020 when the world flocked to digital commerce as a means of survival. Today this is not a matter of survival but of customer habit, preference, and sheer demand. 🔹 High-frequency shopping The number of shoppers across the region who now report shopping online at least once per day has grown by 80% since 2020. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the growth in the number of consumers shopping daily over the past 48 months has seen a staggering 90% growth! This means an estimated 2.6 million Saudi shoppers now pay for things online at least once a day. 🔹 The rise of digital wallets There is no doubt that the way we pay has undergone tremendous change in recent years. Although contactless and mobile payment methods became more popular during the pandemic. Now, more than 48 months down the line, we can confidently say that they are going completely mainstream. These payment options provide ease, security, and efficiency, and are growing in popularity across the region. Our processing data shows that while Apple Pay currently holds a dominant position in the MENA digital wallets landscape, Google Pay and local alternatives like STC Pay are swiftly gaining ground. Despite Apple Pay’s lead, Google Pay’s growth trajectory is notable, though there remains a discernible gap between the two. 🔹 Buy Now, Pay Later: Another essential part of MENA’s digital commerce story Buy Now, Pay Later products appear to have a minor role, with only 3% of consumers listing it as their preferred payment method. We can take a step back and see that it represents a cornerstone feature in the region’s digital growth story. Indeed local BNPL offerings such as Tamara and Tabby continue to significantly deepen their regional penetration. Seemingly from nowhere modern BNPL offerings launched onto the scene in 2020 and saw impressive immediate adoption. In the past 12 months that adoption rate only increased with more than 62% of the population surveyed reporting having used a BNPL option during 2023. Day 1: After a decade of navigating various facets of online retail such as Direct-to-Consumer (D2C), Marketplaces, and Quick Commerce (Q-Commerce), here is my learnings! In online retail, success relied on analyzing extensive datasets, identifying market trends, and aggressively expanding profitable products through: 1. Performance Marketing: Utilizing data-driven marketing strategies to optimize customer acquisition and enhance brand visibility. 2. Discount Strategies: Employing promotional tactics to attract and retain customers, leveraging discounts and offers effectively. 3. Sales Channel Diversification: Maximizing reach by utilizing multiple sales channels such as Amazon, Blinkit, and Flipkart, tailoring offerings to suit each platform's unique audience. 4. Partnership Development: Cultivating strategic alliances with sales channels, suppliers, and influencers to amplify brand presence and drive sales. However, challenges have emerged over time in online retail, notably escalating Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC) for first purchase and the increasingly difficult task of retaining customers amidst heightened market competition and easy market entry for new brands. Contrary to popular belief, online retail is getting quite saturated for some large categories (Newer & Gen-Z popular brands will continue to eat into market share of OG online brands but won't expand the market). Will share more of my professional learnings in the coming days, for now I am jumping off to serve my customers at Canopy Kitchen, my newly opened restaurant. Wish me luck people. Back in Mumbai now but I spent the past few days at the Dubai Fintech Summit, which was an eyeopener. While I know that fintech is hot, I did not know how advanced it is becoming, how much it is transforming lives and communities and how much research and experimentation is going on in the field. The summit had excellent speakers, pioneers in the space, and many of them were Indians who had founded their companies in the UAE or were running them in India. There was also an aging but very sharp Mark Mobius, whose insights on how emerging markets are taking the lead on fintech I found interesting. There was a lot of food for thought but I'll leave here two insights that the speakers offered: 1. Merely offering payments no longer comprises value. Fintech offerings must add several layers to payments, such as the spotting of spending patterns, ways to reduce costs, credit access, etc. 2. The idea that incumbents (banks) are bad and disruptors (fintech companies) are good is silly. Both must coexist and collaborate to make customers' lives better. While the sessions were terrific, the connections I made there were even more valuable. Meeting different people and exchanging ideas - that's the best pat about such events, isn't it? #dubaifintechsummit #fintech

Four things on a Tuesday morning: 1) We’ve spoken to talabat CEO Tomaso Rodriguez ahead of what could be the year’s biggest IPO. The delivery giant wants to expand into adjacent verticals such as health and beauty, but has no desire to become an everything app, says Tomaso (below, complete with delivery bag), or immediate plans for other geographies. Instead, he wants to grow the markets he’s in and the customers he has. Find out how on the podcast. 2) DAMAC Properties is going into the airline business, at least according to its social media. The developer is teasing a luxury carrier to holiday destinations such as Fiji (a mere 14,000 kilometers away) and Bora Bora. Whether this is a commercial move or a gift-with-purchase remains to be seen 3) … while Emirates has moved into the Christmas jumper business. Not content with making luggage from its first class seats, the airline is now offering seasonal sweaters, pajamas and table mats with a festive A380 motif. More of it! 4) And a bit of proxy data for you this morning. Emaar Properties PJSC has seen footfall at The Dubai Mall rise 6% in the first nine months of 2024, and retail sales from its tenants overall by the same - while its hospo, leisure and entertainment revenues are up 7%. CORRECTION: an earlier version of this post suggested football was up at Dubai Mall. A typo, but if they want to introduce it as a beat-the-heat summer sport in the aisles I'm happy to take the credit.

Delivery Hero has boosted the size of Talabat’s initial public offering (IPO) to 20 per cent due to significant investor demand for what is set to be the biggest listing in the UAE this year. The German firm initially planned to raise $1.52bn (Dhs5.6bn) by offering a 15 per cent stake in Talabat. Delivery Hero said that it had increased the number of ordinary shares offered in the IPO of its Middle East business to 4.7 billion, constituting a 20 per cent stake, at Dhs1.60 apiece, the top end of a range that started at Dhs1.50bn to raise as much as $2bn. The indicative share price implies a market valuation of around $10.2bn at the top of the range.
