Are #secondaries the solution to #MENA's Exits? In a recent conversation with Basil M. from Key Capital, we discussed the emerging potential for IPOs, secondaries and exits in the market. Secondary funds, which target shares in early stage investment rounds at a discount, can stimulate market participation by providing liquidity to existing shareholders without diluting company equity. These investments enable early investors to exit, allowing founders to clean up their cap table and receive a potential fresh injection of capital. Of course, the secondaries market in the #MENA region is still emerging, but given the global increase in secondary investments, perhaps it’s not too long before it becomes more commonplace in the region. A Dubai-based fund-of-funds focused on backing emerging venture investors, has raised $5 million of the $10 million target for its debut fund. Amkan Ventures is connecting family offices in the Gulf region and emerging U.S.-based VCs — two groups unlikely to otherwise meet. New and exclusive: Saudi Arabia is likely to cut billions of dollars in spending on some of its biggest development projects, and place other plans on hold, as the kingdom grapples with the scale of its vast economic makeover. A government committee led by the de facto Saudi ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, is close to completing a sweeping review of mega projects including the sprawling desert development known as Neom, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. Neom, which is being developed on the Red Sea coast, is expected to be allocated 20% less than its targeted budget for this year, the people said. Its plans to launch a new airline for the area are on hold, they said. Other developments being curtailed include Qiddiya Coast, an unannounced tourism and entertainment project in Jeddah on the Red Sea that had a potential budget of $50 billion at one point, according to the people. The cuts mark a shift in priorities for Saudi Arabia, which under its Vision 2030 plan to reshape the economy has announced projects costing an estimated $1.25 trillion. Lower oil prices, weaker-than-projected foreign investment and at least three more years of deficits in the national budget means it must now decide what to focus on first and at what pace. The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) posted a record surge in its assets under management during the first quarter of 2024, driven by an "unprecedented influx" of global asset managers establishing operations in the international financial centre. AUMs soared by 211 per cent annually in the three months ended March, as the number of operational entities rose by 30 per cent year-on-year to 1,950, including 291 financial services entities, ADGM said on Monday. The number of fund and asset managers operating at ADGM reached 107, which collectively manage 137 funds. MENA Equity Capital Markets Show Remarkable Growth in 2024 In the first nine months of 2024, MENA equity capital markets (ECM) secured $21 billion through equity and equity-related issuances, reflecting an impressive 154% increase compared to the same period last year. This figure represents the highest total for the first three quarters since 2008, primarily driven by a $12.3 billion stock sale from Saudi Arabia’s Aramco. The number of issues rose by 11%, with initial public offerings (IPOs) making up 24% of the overall activity and follow-on issuances constituting 76%. A total of 30 IPOs raised $5.0 billion, which is 28% lower than the total amount raised last year. Among the significant transactions, the UAE’s NMDC Energy raised $876.7 million in its debut on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, making it the largest IPO in the region for the first nine months of 2024. The energy and power sector was the most active, amassing $14.3 billion, which accounted for 68% of total equity capital raised. The retail sector followed, contributing 12%. In an interview with Economy Middle East, Damian Bunce, CEO of GTN Middle East, outlined the company’s 24-year journey. Operating exclusively on a B2B2C model within the trading and investing sectors, Bunce emphasized that GTN is a privately-owned firm with a global workforce of over 450 employees. The company is regulated in major financial hubs including Dubai, Singapore, the US, South Africa, and soon the UK. Bunce also highlighted GTN's significant partnership with Revolut, which resulted in a pioneering solution that, initially launched in Europe, offers nearly 30 million users the ability to invest in fractionalized bonds starting at just $100. While the west has almost completely halted capital investment in China, Middle East sovereigns continue to be active as Qatar's sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority acquires a 10% stake in China Asset Management Co., Ltd. Co., one of the nation’s largest mutual fund firms. The stake will be sold by leading Chinese private equity fund manager Primavera Capital Group, creating a rare exit in the current China private equity market! The Chinese mutual fund industry expanded to more than 30 trillion yuan ($4.1 trillion) in April even after a stock-market rout earlier in the year, and is poised to continue to achieve attractive forward growth driven by domestic demand, in spite of the slowdown in global foreign capital.
