De-dollarisation- Part I There have been many reports in Saudi Arabia's cancellation of the petrol dollar agreement signals end of the Dollar as a world's dominant reserve currency. ( BTW, dollar is not the only reserve currency- Euro, Sterling and Yen are the others). If anyone had a chance of replacing the dollar as the reserve currency, it was Euro - with Eurozone market being approximately the same size as the US. But that hasn't happened in the last 24 years. Coming back to the petrodollar issue- the net export of oil from OPEC countries was around $880 Billion while the total value of international trade was $31 trillion ( out of which a very large part is denominated in USD). For example India's largest trading partner is China- and both convert each other's currency to dollars and pay each other in dollars and this is the case with trade between most country-pairs where one is not the US. So $880 B/ $31 trillion is about 3% of the world trade. Will it have a significant impact on the US dollar to trigger a"de-dollarisation"? Highly unlikely -- even Saudi needs dollars to buy us weapons, Apple computers, Iphones, Windows etc which can't be bought using the Saudi Riyal. If a part of it's oil are bough using other currencies then Saudi will have to convert the other currencies to the USD to buy goods and services from the US. So the et impact of this is likely to be very marginal. 40% of Japan's and 50% of UK's trade are USD, in spite of both of them being reserve currencies. But "de-dollarisation" will happen over a period of time, if China and India become big markets in the next 20-30 years. ( Xi has slowed down this in China by turning into a "rule-until-die" autocrat cum dictator with territorial expansion goals.) At this point,however, the INR nor the Remnibi are anywhere near being reserve currencies as they are subject to stringent capital controls. No central bank is like to keep the INR in its reserves -- especially following idiotic ideas like de-monitization). Between 1800 and 1920( When 1 pound was equal to 5 USD), the Pound Shad the same status that the USD has today. The transition from Sterling to USD took ~50 years with a depression and the bloodiest war in history. In 1944, when it was clear that Britain's hey days are over, a period of fixed exchange rates was created by Bretton Woods agreement. This meant currencies of all countries were pegged to the dollar at a fixed rate. This arrangement lasted till 1971 when Nixon killed the agreement and the floating exchange rate era began. From the 1970s, the dollar became the dominant currency in internation trade as well as in the reserves of central banks. I am not saying that de-dollarisation will follow the same trajectory-- but it will be as complicated and will take several decades. There is another angle to this - the role of US treasury bonds.
