The best part of work is always at the terminals. Yesterday at the HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG Container Terminal Tollerort. Supporting the incredible works of founders Marcel Wiegand and Nico Marks and their exciting venture passify that secures and automates gate processes. The roll-out was a blast. Speaking with hundreds of truck drivers all day long and showing them the easiness of the gate process via smartphone App. This is another great example why founders who have years of terminal work experiences make the difference when it comes to gate integration, process knowledge and smooth software roll-outs. A few weeks ago, I received a call from a start-up founder who was gathering references about Bloomhaus Ventures AG. The VC was considering investing in his start-up, while CORTEXIA smart. clean. sustainable. – smart. clean. sustainable. – already belongs to the "Bloomhaus Family." I found the approach of checking the fit with potential investors very smart. This weekend, Bloomhaus invited the founders from their portfolio for a "Family Day," covering the following topics: 👉 How to remain calm in chaos (Nora Blum) 👉How to build & scale B2B sales quickly (Manuel Hartmann) 👉How to raise for Series A (Mickaël Bellaïche, Thomas Molleker and Dehua Zhu). 🏃 Exactly the right topics, in the right order, to help founders win the marathon of entrepreneurship. 🍀 A thoughtful note awaited each participant in their hotel room, adding a personal touch to the experience. 🎉 Great talks & creative hands-on workshops: That was the Startup Port Community Day 2024 Our Project Lead Arthur Erdmann and our Program Manager Marc Henes had a great time at the Community Day 2024 powered by Startup Port! 🙌 Of course we from AI.STARTUP.HUB Hamburg are there: once a year, the startup community of the Hamburg metropolitan region comes together to expand and strengthen the network. This time at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Students interested in founding a company, young and experienced founders, entrepreneurship professors and supporters have the opportunity to get to know the players, connect and get new projects off the ground. 💡💪 The focus was entirely on interaction: as part of an ideation challenge, teams were thrown together to come up with great new startup ideas! The participants used the creative stands at the “Marketplace of Inspiration” for this purpose. What a great idea! We are very impressed. 😍 After the successful workshop, there was plenty of networking over drinks and snacks. The atmosphere was fantastic, with lively discussions and a good mood everywhere. "Most founders start planning their next funding round too late." The best time to start working on your next funding round is right after closing the previous one, by drafting the new fundraising deck immediately. This inspiring topic we discussed during my latest workshop with our portfolio company Valuecase with Dr. Jan Niklas Wick & Lennart Prange and Mika Weissenberger from XAnge. I've noticed a pattern among our most successful founders they're already visualizing and planning their next milestones while the ink is still drying on their current term sheet. The strategy is simple: Work backwards from the next funding round! Here’s a quick example: One of our portfolio founders wrapped up their Seed and immediately mapped out their Series A milestones in a draft deck (such as Paul Hock & Nina Germanus @ Green Fusion GmbH). Six months later, not only were those goals achieved, but the original deck turned into the blueprint for their next pitch. They saved valuable time and secured a successful future by having a clear plan from the start. Here’s why this "VC manifesting" approach works: 📍 Crystallizes the goals for your next milestone. 📊 Creates clear accountability to achieve them. 🎨 Shapes the narrative evolution of your company. 🧭 Provides a north star for team alignment. The (next round’s) deck becomes more than just a fundraising tool, it’s your company’s strategic compass. And here’s the magic: when you actually hit those milestones, the deck becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You’re not scrambling to piece together a narrative at the last minute; you’ve documented the journey from the beginning. Pro tip: - Include specific numbers. - Make it a living document. - Review it quarterly. - Let it evolve with your learnings and market dynamics. This approach ensures the final version is stronger, clearer, and ready when you need it. Remember, the best founders don’t just build to raise, they raise to build. More importantly; both cities combined raised just as much as Paris. A year ago; Berlin was compared to Paris as being as impactful. Exploitative renting is now *innovation*. One of the key requirements when founding a company is the ability to sustain yourself without a reliable income for an extended period of time. The reality is that I, and most of the startup founders I know have gone through periods of time living off savings. Naturally, the biggest expenditure is normally rent, and the Berlin housing situation is an absolute nightmare. When I was looking for an apartment a couple of years ago I applied for 150 viewings, of which I was only invited to viewings for 6. Some of these viewings were 'open house' and consequently had 50 other people in attendance. I got lucky and was offered a nice apartment, but I ended up paying more than I could really afford without a reliable income. You take what you can get! That's why housing 'sellers markets' stifle innovation, it stamps on the ability of people to take a risk on a venture, causing them to burn through their savings at an alarming rate. This is particularly true if you are young, and don't have many savings, and if you're an outsider so don't have family to crash with for a while. I've now left Berlin, and this kind of 'innovation', whereby 13sqm rooms cost 1100 euros per month, will be the reason that lots of other people do too. Berlin tried to put some stronger rent controls in place a couple of years back, but they were ultimately defeated by a powerful lobby representing the interests of landlords.
