Despite the growth of the video on demand market, traditional TV viewership is seeing a slow but steady growth worldwide.    However, this doesn’t seem to be the case in the UAE.   TV viewing has declined among UAE residents, according to YouGov’s latest media report.   A higher proportion of UAE residents (70%) spent less than 10 hours per week on live TV viewership in 2023 compared to 2021 (54%).   Aside from this, video on demand (VOD) platforms have experienced increased usage in the last two years, with Amazon Prime and YouTube having had the largest uplift.   The report found that Gen Z were the most likely to use on demand services, with YouTube dominating Gen Z’s top choice for on-demand TV. Big city energy is contagious. After three months in Sharjah, the one thing that lacked in our professional lives was the constant inspiration from our surroundings: ✔️ buildings that defy the laws of physics ✔️ constantly evolving roads to accommodate influxes in traffic ✔️ diversity of people in both cultural and financial backgrounds You see, in Dubai you drive past Burj Khalifa and think about how humans built such an amazing tower—inspiring you to keep building your business. You get stuck in traffic on one road today, only to find out a few weeks later that they’re expanding the road or creating some kind of diversion to ease the flow of traffic—inspiring you to keep trying to evolve in your business to achieve your goals. You walk past all kinds of cars in a parking lot, from Nissan Sunnys all the way to Ferraris and Lamborghinis—inspiring you to diversify your business interests and reach for higher goals. All of which you doesn’t happen on the regular in Sharjah—or many other cities across the region. Even in 2024, recruiting the perfect fit requires more than just a CV. My ticking boxes? Portfolio quality, aesthetic fit, personality, and a global perspective. Let’s be real—only someone with industry experience knows what to look for (sorry, HR!). Over the years, I’ve interviewed countless candidates and been tasked with: 1️⃣ Setting up creative teams from scratch (my favorite mission!) 2️⃣ Reorganizing teams (read: hiring and letting go) 3️⃣ Training teams 4️⃣ Leading teams The best talent often heads to agencies with better pay, resumes, and awards. In-house teams are left with those who don’t like agencies, juniors, burnt-out creatives, and disillusioned individuals. We need a charismatic leader to attract and inspire top talent! 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 Before building a team, the company must define the creative team’s purpose. Is it innovative campaigns, content creation, or event production? The vision shapes the structure. No vision, no structure! Simple. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 A well-rounded team needs: • Leadership: Creative Director, Art Director • Design/Visuals: Graphic Designers, Motion Designers • Content/Copy: Copywriters, Content Strategists • Technology: Developers, UX/UI Designers • Support: Project Managers, Production Coordinators 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁 Recruiting isn’t easy. I’ve met: • Burnt-out creatives from agencies, craving inspiration. • Talented senior designers overlooked for Art Director roles. • Fresh grads bringing printed portfolios, while some experienced designers lack even a Behance profile. • Shy designers who miss out on “award-winning” projects because they’re overshadowed by louder voices. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 Finding the right Art Director is a turning point. They’re rare, but they’re worth it. Art Directors: • Save time and bring creative visions to life. • Inspire designers and bridge the gap between strategy and execution. • Free up Creative Directors to focus on strategy, concept, tone, and direction—not execution. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟱: 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 Too often, I’ve seen in-house teams confuse roles. A Creative Director isn’t an Art Director, and an Art Director isn’t just a glorified designer. There’s a reason agencies have structured team hierarchies—it works. Building creative teams is an art in itself, and every step matters.
