HR news update: UAE aims to be R&D powerhouse At Gitex Global 2024, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE's Minister of Economy, expressed the nation's ambition to become a global research and development (R&D) hub. He said: “We want the world to look at the UAE as an R&D hub, not just for our 10m people, but for the 300m across the region.” The UAE is focusing on cultivating homegrown talent in artificial intelligence and STEM fields to reduce reliance on foreign expertise. The government has ramped up investments in education and launched initiatives to equip youth with essential skills. Al Marri highlighted the importance of data centres, stating that every dollar invested could yield up to ten dollars in economic value. The UAE has achieved a 74% non-oil contribution to its economy, with a target of 80% by 2030, showcasing its commitment to diversifying away from oil dependency.
