He played a pivotal role in founding the Saudi Capital Market Authority (CMA), where he was instrumental in drafting regulations, implementing procedures, and developing strategies that established a modern financial market in Saudi Arabia. The company faced significant losses when Al-Rumayyan took over as the head of Saudi Fransi Capital (BSF). Through his strategic vision and expertise in restructuring systems and processes, he transformed the company into a profitable entity within a year. The following year saw profits double, solidifying Saudi Fransi Capital’s position as a success story in the Saudi financial industry. Al-Rumayyan’s leadership extended to adopting best practices in management and investment, significantly enhancing operational efficiency, governance, and overall performance. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recognized Al-Rumayyan’s exceptional track record and deep expertise, appointing him to establish and lead the Decision Support Center at the Royal Court. In less than a month after Fitch Ratings announced it could no longer measure Lebanon's creditworthiness, another major American agency, Standard & Poor’s (S&P), released its latest semi-annual report on Monday evening. In this report, S&P reiterates and clarifies its previous assessment of Lebanon, which it has considered in selective default for the past four years — Lebanon defaulted on its Eurobonds in March 2020. Since then, Lebanon has received an "SD" (selective default) rating for its foreign currency debt in both the short and long terms. Its Lebanese lira Treasury bills have been rated "CC" and "C" with a negative outlook. Although the state continues to honor these bills, their value has significantly declined due to the lira's collapse over the past five years. S&P’s ratings align with those of Moody’s and Fitch until the latter's announcement last July. The situation in Lebanon has become even more uncertain since the outbreak of the Gaza war on Oct. 7, which has spilled over into the South of Lebanon, as noted in the report. "The negative outlook on the 'CC' long-term domestic currency rating reflects our view that the government could restructure its local currency debt as part of a broader program. The outlook also reflects that shortcomings in public sector administrative capacity could, in our opinion, present risks to timely debt service," the agency explained. Here I would like to share my top takeaways: The True Essence of "Disruption" Prof. Roa redefined disruption, arguing that it's overused and misunderstood. Legacy industries must not simply "disrupt" but instead adapt with a clear vision and responsiveness to technological shifts, from AI to Gen AI, and changing customer behaviors. Learning from Real Estate & Media Transformations The pandemic's effect on commercial real estate and the dramatic digital shift in media were focal points. Examples like the Washington Post’s pivot under Jeff Bezos illustrated that embracing digital and focusing on audience engagement metrics can turn losses into lasting growth. Speed & Experimentation: Modern Strategy Traditional strategy often relied on a set vision, but today's market demands quick decision-making and an experimental approach. Prof. Roa reminded us that “speed is your friend,” especially when managing unknown variables, as shown in Domino's success after its radical reinvention. Embracing Cultural Transformation Transformation isn’t only digital. A true shift involves evolving corporate culture, ensuring clear accountability, and avoiding complacency. Prof. Roa noted that company culture often has more influence than national culture on driving transformation, urging leaders to foster a proactive mindset. Sustainable Speed & Accountability Speed proved essential during the pandemic, but sustainability matters. Companies like Pfizer exemplified fast decision-making, yet maintaining this pace post-pandemic is challenging. Clear accountability structures, where responsibilities are well-defined, prevent stagnation and support resilience. The Transformational Journey of PIF: From Vision to Global Economic Powerhouse 🔸️ The Public Investment Fund (PIF) was established in 1971 as a critical instrument for driving economic growth in #SaudiArabia through strategic #investments. Over the years, PIF has evolved significantly, but the real transformation began with Vision 2030. Under this ambitious plan, the fund was restructured to become the central engine of the Kingdom’s economic development. 🔸️ In 2015, with the rollout of #Vision2030, the #PIF adopted new strategies focusing on economic diversification and sustainability. These efforts led to the fund’s assets soaring from 150 billion SAR ($40 billion) to 861 billion SAR ($229 billion) by 2024, with annual returns rising from 2-3% to over 8%. 🔸️ When Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced in 2016 that PIF would become the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, valued at 7.5 trillion SAR ($2 trillion), many considered this vision ambitious, even unattainable. However, as time has shown, the PIF has met and exceeded these expectations, emerging as a pivotal force in transforming Saudi Arabia’s economy. 🔸️ In a 2021 interview, Crown Prince emphasized that the PIF would grow in size and diversify its investments significantly. The fund aims to grow its assets to 10 trillion SAR ($2.67 trillion) by 2030, positioning it as the largest sovereign wealth fund globally. This strategic shift will enable the PIF to inject 160 billion SAR ($42.67 billion) into the Saudi economy in 2021, with plans to increase this amount to 400 billion SAR ($106.67 billion) annually by 2030. These substantial investments are channeled into mega projects like NEOM, Qiddiya, the Red Sea Project, and other giga projects integral to steering the Saudi economy toward a more sustainable and innovative future. 🔸️ Today, the PIF is an economic powerhouse and a key driver of new investments within the Kingdom. The fund's domestic spending has surged from 3 billion SAR ($800 million) annually before Vision 2030 to 90 billion SAR ($24 billion) in 2020 and then to 160 billion SAR ($42.67 billion) in 2021.
