Are #secondaries the solution to #MENA's Exits? In a recent conversation with Basil M. from Key Capital, we discussed the emerging potential for IPOs, secondaries and exits in the market. Secondary funds, which target shares in early stage investment rounds at a discount, can stimulate market participation by providing liquidity to existing shareholders without diluting company equity. These investments enable early investors to exit, allowing founders to clean up their cap table and receive a potential fresh injection of capital. Of course, the secondaries market in the #MENA region is still emerging, but given the global increase in secondary investments, perhaps it’s not too long before it becomes more commonplace in the region. The UAE and Bahrain lead the World Bank's updated 2024 Real GDP growth in the GCC: - UAE total 3.9%,Oil 5.8%, Non-oil 3.2% - Bahrain total 3.5%, Oil 1.3%, Non-oil ~4% - Kuwait total 2.8%, Oil 3.6%, Non-oil 2.1% - Saudi Arabia total 2.5%, Oil -0.8%, Non-oil 4.8% - Qatar total 2.1%, Oil 1.6%, Non-oil 2.4% - Oman: total 1.5% (no breakdowns provided in press) Growth in 2025 is also projected higher with more oil output expected and higher non-oil growth (tourism, infrastructure, services etc)

This could prove to be a very significant devlopment for global investment managers who want to distribute their funds and strategies in the Middle East. Currently each country has its own, often very different, regulations and being registered in one country (or even in one Emirate) does not automatically provide access to the next. It will be interesting to see the detail, but both LPs and GPs will welcome the clarity that passporting could bring.

The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) posted a record surge in its assets under management during the first quarter of 2024, driven by an "unprecedented influx" of global asset managers establishing operations in the international financial centre. AUMs soared by 211 per cent annually in the three months ended March, as the number of operational entities rose by 30 per cent year-on-year to 1,950, including 291 financial services entities, ADGM said on Monday. The number of fund and asset managers operating at ADGM reached 107, which collectively manage 137 funds. Western fund managers are looking increasingly towards the UAE for new investment prospects. Why would they do this, especially given the money to be made in holding Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia or other such stocks? There are a number of factors contributing to this shift, not least of which is the 2007-esque nature of valuation ratios. Western equity markets, despite their high levels of liquidity and innovation, simply do not offer the kind of margin for safety that UAE securities do. A Dubai-based fund-of-funds focused on backing emerging venture investors, has raised $5 million of the $10 million target for its debut fund. Amkan Ventures is connecting family offices in the Gulf region and emerging U.S.-based VCs — two groups unlikely to otherwise meet.
