Whilst working on GoPlugable we’ve often talked about our bootstrapping journey where we funded our first year of development almost exclusively through grants competitions and accelerator programs. And whilst we can’t win everything, with £150,000 of equity free funds raised in 10 months it’s fair to say we’ve had a pretty good run at it! I always recommend to startups to avail of the support out there and bootstrap for as long as you can, we’ve gotten support both locally and internationally and it definitely can be done. 💸 Part of what I love so much about being in the startup world is not only working on my own startup but also hearing what others are working on. I get quite a lot of messages from very early stage founders asking how we managed to build our platform and get it off the ground on bootstrapped funds - every founder I have the opportunity to help in some way has also taught me something. As always my inbox is open and I’m more than happy to answer any questions you have but I wanted to gauge interest for offering more in depth one hour calls to help you to be able to present your startup in the best way possible whether it be through an application programme, pitch deck, website or MVP. Things are always busy at GoPlugable so for a very small fee I can allocate more of my time to give this more in depth advice based on what you need help with most. So if interested please give me a dm 🙋🏻♀️ Things I can help with: 1. Writing application forms and how to speed this process up when applying for many things at a time (we have this down to a fine art at GoPlugable!). 2. Putting together pitch deck in 3 min, 5min and 10 min formats and what is needed for each. 3. Help with what is needed for an MVP/wireframe, advice around budgeting and can provide intros to developers/ web designers who can provide quality work at a startup friendly price. 4. Give you a heads up on what applications you should be applying for and update you on this via email. 5. Basics of financial projections modelling- particularly for B2C/marketplaces. 6. Go to market strategies, marketing and PR advice. Applications and programmes I have experience with: -QUB Dragons Den winner 2023 -QUest Programme participant and pitch winner -INVENT winner 2023 -Techstart 10K and 35K proof of concept grants -Invest NI from student to first sale grant -innovateUK -Catalyst Cofounders -Enterprise Ireland New Frontiers Programme -Student Entrepreneur Awards -Santander X semi finalist -FIA mobility startup winner -Impact shakers urban impact pitch winner - and a lot more!

Continuing the good news for Pride on this Monday morning…. So proud of Amir Baradaran on the launch of Niloom.ai (formerly ABXR Engine). Such a great venture and I’m so proud to be on the advisory board. It’s been a real labour of love for Amir, who’s a fellow LGBT+ Founder & Entrepreneur, and he’s put so much time and energy into this. Niloom.ai is the first comprehensive Generative AI-powered spatial computing (AR/VR) content creation platform. It is a browser-based, no-code, easy to use and affordable solution to create sophisticated augmented and virtual reality experiences. It harnesses GenAI to streamline the entire process of content creation from ideation, development, prototyping, editing, live collaborating and publishing instantly across all devices (Apple Vision Pro, Meta’s Quest, and smartphones). And I think it’s brilliant! Congratulations once again Amir! Niloom.ai may be all about virtual reality, but the real reality of it all is the work that you’ve put in to get it off the ground. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ed2HggCd You can join Niloom and Prompt to AR here: https://www.niloom.ai/ 🤓💻👾 #GenerativeAI #spatialcomputing #AR #VR #happymonday

Last week, the ‘CAIO Collective’ caught up in central London for an event that was anything but ordinary. Since last month’s meetup with our Business Safari through Big Data LDN, we’ve welcomed a further seventeen in person members and over 60 virtual members! So… this was a gathering of some of the sharpest minds in AI leadership all focused on navigating the increasingly complex landscape of driving real value from artificial intelligence and its real-world applications. This session came at a critical time, as the sector grapples with new regulations, ethical considerations, and the rapid pace of technological advancement and this meant a packed agenda. By strong demand, we pushed the AI talent, learning, and development into December’s meetup using the time instead to focus on this month’s hot topic… the European AI Act (AIA). So… the AIA was at the forefront of our discussions this time around. Its impact on the industry is set to be profound, but not without some controversy. While many welcomed the Act’s intent to enforce transparency, fairness and accountability, there was a fervent shared concern about its potential to curb innovation. This was especially the case for small and medium enterprises. For many in the Collective, this regulation represents a call to action. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about demonstrating how responsible AI can genuinely thrive under a robust framework. The debate also touched on the strategic importance of engaging with policymakers early and ensuring that the voices of practitioners who understand AI’s real-world complexities are really heard. Another focal point was the rise of AI-powered decision-making systems. From dynamic supply chain optimisation to real-time fraud detection, AI’s ability to handle complex decision-making processes is driving a new wave of operational efficiency across industries. However, it’s not without its challenges. Many organisations are grappling with how to deploy these systems at scale while ensuring transparency and maintaining a human in the loop oversight. The discussion highlighted that successful AI deployment isn’t just about technology; it’s about building trust - both within organisations and with their customers. The event was not just a forum for discussion but a call to action. The Collective is dedicated to shaping the future of AI by building frameworks that are ethical, strategic and sustainable. If you’re a Chief AI Officer or in AI leadership and want to engage with a community that’s on the cutting edge of these issues, we’d love to have you join us. Our next gathering is provisionally scheduled for 4 December at The Century Club, where we’ll dive into the critical topic of talent, learning, and development in AI - a key factor in sustaining the industry’s momentum. #CAIOCollective #ChiefAIOfficer #EUAIAct #AIRegulation #AILeadership #EthicalAI #DataGovernance #AIinBusiness #ChathamHouseRules

On Earth Day 🌏 , I'd like to share the reason we established Arbor Verification Tech a year ago. Arbor was born from a shared vision with Prof. Olinga Taeed to leverage social values, particularly environmental ones. We do this by empowering support for green initiatives, funding them, and raising public awareness of these values. Why Non-Financial Values Matter Unlike financial values, which are easily transacted, non-financial values are harder to quantify but no less important to our world. People tend to disregard them, often seeing someone who earns $1,000 as more successful than one who plants 1,000 trees. What We Do To address this trust gap, we simply put a layer of verification on top of every green activity. We tokenize all contributions and then make them transparent for everyone to see. Through technical and sentimental assessments, we help projects build a strong foundation of trust. Building a Greener Future After decades of academic research and experimental projects in Centre for Citizenship, Enterprise and Governance, we've found that trust is the cornerstone of every successful green act. We aim to break the vicious cycle: initiate a green project, attract initial support, achieve progress, run out of funds, lose momentum, and ultimately fail. At Arbor, we aim to change that paradigm and establish a new way of thinking. We connect small dots of individual contributions to create a gigantic force for green change. Financial values become the fuel that runs the engine of non-financial value generation. It's all about harnessing small contributions from millions of people around the world to save our Mother Earth. #Earth #Sustainable #Regenerative

From start up to set up - the only way is up with Emerhub! What do you do when you’re a start up that wants to set up in the UAE? One could go down the route of doing it all oneself - which for anyone who has had to deal with some of the numerous hoops and hurdles involved with company formation in the UAE, will know it can be quite a minefield - and often, unsurprisingly, rather frustrating. The other, and less painful way, would be to find a business set up partner that not only knows and understands you as a client, but ensures you're set up for success from the very beginning. After doing some extensive research, it quickly became apparent that choosing the right partner to guide me through this process was crucial for long-term success. Following a rigorous selection process, I found the perfect match in Emerhub. Founded in 2011, Emerhub has become one of the largest corporate secretarial firms focusing on emerging markets. With easy access to top local advisors, quick responses, global standards across markets and ongoing support for businesses even after set-up, Emerhub showcased a personalized approach during my initial conversations with them, which from day one put them over the edge in comparison to some of the other companies I had reached out to for similar services. A massive shoutout has to go to Sohaib Ikram, my representative at Emerhub, who was instrumental in making my set up experience exceptional. Sohaib's attention to detail, proactive approach, and unwavering commitment to clear and constant communication were key factors in ensuring that every step of the process was smooth and efficient from A to Z. While no journey is ever perfect, particularly when dealing with some of the endless red tape one has to go through when setting up, Sohaib's willingness to quickly address and rectify any issues that arose was a testament to Emerhub's dedication to client satisfaction as opposed to just about profit. His insights and collaborative spirit were invaluable, and it's why I could tell that Emerhub are not just in the business of setting up companies; they are in the business of setting up businesses for success. As I continue on my venture with iwantanidea.com, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Sohaib Ikram and his team at Emerhub. Their support has been nothing short of outstanding, and I look forward to a continued partnership as I grow and innovate in the UAE market. To all the entrepreneurs and business owners out there, if you're looking to set up shop in the UAE, I highly recommend Emerhub. They will not only meet your expectations but I assure you, will exceed them, ensuring that your business is set up for success from day one. Thank you Emerhub! #iwantanidea #StartupLife #UAEBusiness #Emerhub #Entrepreneurship #BusinessSetup #Dubai #Innovation #CommunicationsConsultancy

"You make coalitions work through a very clear set of principles." This quote from Emma Pinchbeck of Energy UK is so bang on the money. When we have challenges running coalitions, the problem that sits underneath them is normally one of: - we're here because it looks good for us to be here - we're here because we feel like we should be here - we're here because FOMO And thus, as Yoda did not say, "Unwilling they are. Together work they cannot. Crumble to dust, such alliances do." Establishing principles for what the coalition is there to do and how it will do it up front, so that those who disagree do not join, is core to the coalition being able to achieve anything. Yes it means less organisations getting involved, but yes it also means you're more likely to achieve something. Now Is the Time to Harness AI for Impact and Change 💡 This year, Ben Keene, Katie McPhee and I have spoken to so many founders and leaders passionate about making a difference – whether it's fighting climate change, supporting underserved communities, or driving sustainability. The common thread? A deep desire to do more, but often feeling held back by time, resources, or not knowing where to start with AI We get it. The hurdles are real: - Confidence in how to start with AI tools - Changing old work habits to fit new AI-powered solutions - Not fully grasping what AI can and can’t do - Concerns about AI risks like energy use or biases But here’s the thing – we can’t afford to wait. The problems we’re solving are too urgent. We need to take bold steps, and we believe AI can unlock new levels of efficiency and impact, helping us solve bigger challenges faster and more cost-effectively. 🚀 That’s why we are working on ways to bridge this gap. We want to support the inspired and we want to hear if you are: 🍋A founder launching or scaling an impact venture 🍋A sustainability or impact leader in your organisation 🍋A community leader driving change If AI could help you accelerate your mission and make a bigger difference, we want to know how. Share your thoughts and register your interest here: https://buff.ly/3TlGdwl Together, we can build a future where technology and impact go hand in hand. #ImpactAI #AIforGood #Superfli

UK’s highest peak ✅ (Ben Nevis - 1,345 meters) Climbing Ben Nevis was an adventure filled with challenges, insights, and resilience—a journey that reminded me so much of my startup, Namnews. Despite extreme weather, muscle cramps, and moments where giving up felt like an option, our group kept pushing forward. Everyone encouraged each other, just like my team does every day at Namnews. In both the hike and my entrepreneurial journey, there are moments of doubt and exhaustion, but there’s also that relentless spirit to keep going, learning with every step, and growing stronger with every challenge. Namnews is built on this very resilience. It’s a testament that, even on the hardest days, there’s something worth pushing forward for. Just like reaching the summit of Ben Nevis, building something meaningful isn’t easy, but it’s worth every step. To everyone climbing their own “mountains” in life—keep going, find strength in those around you, and remember that every journey has a view from the top! #BenNevis #Resilience #Namnews Davnix Tech

Really enjoyed Startup Grind London's event this week on "Pitching to Media". It was great to meet and watch 🎥 Gabriel Isserlis pitch along with some other awesome founders. 😍 The content reminded me a lot of advice for dealing with investors, with themes around understanding a firm and an individual's subject area, relationship-building over time and doing your homework before doing cold outreach. Some of my key learnings about what journalists are looking for: 👉 be concise and clear about what your company does: journalists are busy people and write for a living, so they know how to succinctly communicate ideas but are very frequently on the receiving end of poor written communication. do this and you will automatically stand out in their inbox. 👉 personalise your outreach: include a relevant topic in your subject line and for goodness' sake get their name right 👉 find their subject: read what they have written before. if possible, speak to other founders or people they have interviewed. get a sense of how your specialism overlaps with theirs and reach out to them when you have a mutual interest. 👉 link your story to what's going on in the world: especially for news publications but may apply to features and other types of publishing too, journalists are writing about what's current. so the more lines you can draw between your mission and what's already in the news, the more likely it is that someone already covering that beat will be interested in a story. 👉 invite them for coffee! (or tea in Jim Norton's case) to build a relationship. Thanks so much to Gabriel Pizzolante , Sam Adekunle and the startup grind team, Craig Corbett and Publicize for organising, sponsors Howard Kennedy LLP and Airwallex and all the judges for providing their insights Sophia Epstein from Digital Frontier , Thomas Macaulay at TNW, Sharon Kits Kimathi at @Reuters and @Jim Norton at the Daily Mail. 🙏🏻

The best founders are natural at balancing vision and pragmatism. They set audacious goals but are not afraid to confront the hard truths. When you're building something new, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of what could be. But the truly great founders are the ones who can also navigate the nitty-gritty details of what is and what needs to be done. Striking this balance is an art. It requires relentless optimism tempered with a dose of skepticism. It means being a dreamer who can execute. How do you balance vision and pragmatism in your journey? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

🎙️ I'm delighted to share my recent conversation with Daisie - Belle on BBC 3 Counties Radio, covering eight Counties in the South-East of England. We delved into the heart of Pivot, discussing how our platform serves as a vital bridge during challenging times. We talked about some deep and meaningful topics that people often find hard to open up about - ↪️ Co-Parenting Complexities: Unpacking the delicate balance and unique challenges of co-parenting. Is it even possible? ↪️ Emotions of Grief and Loss: Navigating the deep emotional journey that accompanies divorce. ↪️ 360-Degree Holistic Care: The comprehensive support system our expert coaches and consultants provide beyond traditional methods. Pivot provides emotional and practical support, offering a 360-degree wraparound care that is often hard to find. We ensure individuals don't fall off that dreaded emotional cliff edge, holding them in all aspects—emotionally, practically, with legal guidance, tips, and tools. We bridge the gap often missing in legal-only support, that often leads people to have an even more challenging break-up experience. 🎙️ Tune in at 40 minutes in to hear more about our mission and the heart behind what we do. One year ago, we launched Latitude Media! Over the last year, we’ve questioned the hyped-up tech backed by Sam Altman, dissected failures in the carbon removal and storage space, heard anxiety in the green hydrogen market, examined the divide in the tech industry over how to build clean energy, and recorded more than a dozen interviews at the DNC and RNC. We also took artificial intelligence very seriously as a foundational coverage area — with lots of rational coverage, a conference series, and detailed research on the state of AI adoption in the power sector. This set us up to cover the nuances of the surge in electricity demand from data centers, months before it became a big story. Before launching Latitude Media last year, many of you knew us as a production company making podcasts about the energy transition. And even as our work expands, audio remains a core part of what we do. Our original podcasts — including our flagship shows Catalyst with Shayle Kann and The Carbon Copy — have brought in 2.5 million downloads. Earlier this year, I stepped back from making The Carbon Copy, and we’re set to launch a new show in November, hosted by Lara Pierpoint, that will profile the people and companies building first-of-a-kind projects. I started reporting on the clean energy market in 2006, when solar PV and wind were just beginning to achieve liftoff. It was immediately clear that the energy transition would be a generation-defining business story — or, as my former Energy Gang co-host Jigar Shah put it: “the largest wealth creation opportunity on the planet.” My Latitude Media co-founder, Scott Clavenna, saw the early signs as well. He co-founded Greentech Media in 2007, which went on to become the defining B2B media and research voice for the budding clean energy industry. In those early days, most other media outlets treated renewables and other forms of clean energy as an “alternative” curiosity. The scale and complexity of the industry have changed radically in the years since — and so has the media environment. With nearly $3 trillion headed into clean energy annually, investment now eclipses that of fossil fuels. And today, there are many high-quality outlets taking the energy transition seriously. We saw an opportunity to bring journalism, events, research, and our production team together for a new B2B media brand. We started Latitude Media as a guide to the energy transition for the people who are shaping it: the entrepreneurs, investors, and companies looking to understand what is working — and what is not working — in today’s market. As we evolve over the coming year, we will continue to dig into the markets, business models, and tech trends at the commercial frontiers of clean energy. Thank you for reading, listening, or attending one of our events! Subscribe to our newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/gsPSkrTt

I have spoken with more early-stage Founders in the first half of this year than any other full year previously. A lot of the time, a big focus for them is around fundraising and it's always high on the discussion agenda (both pre and post raising). Questions like the below are front of centre of them conversations: ▶ What advice can you give me when I'm sitting down with an investor? ▶ What do you think of my pitch deck? ▶ Is there anyone you can introduce me to who's interested in what I'm building? ▶ Once we've raised, how do we start building but keeping the runway extended as long as possible? I received a great email from Hustle Fund earlier in the month with the clear message to Founders to know your numbers and know them in detail. I hope they don't mind me sharing but below are 5 areas they shared that a Founder(s) must know and be able to talk about. There are definitely more you need to be prepared to discuss but these are ones you should absolutely know. 𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 🔹 How much revenue did you earn this month? Last month? The month before? 🔹 Which acquisition channels drove revenue? 🔹 What is the cost of your product (or subscription)? 🔹 How much of your revenue is attributed to the product vs. your consulting services? 🔹 Excluding marketing, what are your margins? 𝟮. 𝗔𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 🔹 What is your cost per acquisition? 🔹 What is your website conversion rate? 🔹 How many daily active users do you have? How many monthly? 🔹 What is your retention rate? 🔹 What is your monthly churn? 𝟯. 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 🔹 How much have you raised to date? 🔹 How much are you raising now? 🔹 What were the terms in your last round? 🔹 What are the terms in this round? 𝟰. 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 🔹 What milestones do you expect to hit with this raise? 🔹 What metrics do you care about when measuring the health of your business? Why? 𝟱. 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 🔹 How have your conversion rates changed over time? Have they increased, decreased, or stayed the same? 🔹 How have different customer acquisition channels performed? For example, what is the difference in conversion rate between Facebook ads versus LinkedIn ads? I hope the above helps guide the Founders out there who are engaging in conversations with VC's / Investors. I'm happy to talk through with anyone in my network who would appreciate a sounding board going into investor meetings, would like to discuss support in getting ready to raise or you have raised and need support around next steps. #founders #startups #investors #vcs

UK-CEE Tech Partnerships Boost Mutual Growth The text discusses the significance of fostering science, innovation, and technology partnerships between the UK and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), highlighting the mutual benefits and potential growth areas. The combined economy of the CEE region, with a GDP exceeding €2 trillion, is rapidly emerging as a hub for technological innovation, having seen a 7.6-fold increase in enterprise value since 2017. The UK's international tech strategy finds alignment with the region's excellence in various sectors, including Austria's semiconductor production and the impactful tech ecosystems in countries like Croatia, Poland, and Czechia. UK efforts, through the Science and Innovation Network (SIN), aim to bridge UK stakeholders with opportunities in the CEE, leveraging the region's high interest in collaborating with the UK, especially highlighted through partnerships in the Horizon Europe program. Tired of another night on the couch? Tonight, you have the chance to be part of something bigger—a gathering of minds focused on the future of health and wellbeing. At The Startup Network Network Pitch Night, brought to life with the support of Bupa we’re showcasing the innovators who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in health tech. This isn’t just another event—it’s a glimpse into how the world is being reshaped by those willing to tackle the most pressing challenges. Imagine a world where virtual reality is more than just entertainment—where it’s saving lives. That’s the vision behind Tia Cummins, PhD Flintworks a platform using VR to treat conditions like PTSD, offering hope to those for whom traditional methods have failed. Or think about the struggle of finding the right disability support. Valenia led by Dr Sam Donegan is harnessing AI to make those connections easier, bringing real solutions to people in need, not just what appears at the top of a search engine. Innovation doesn’t stop there. We all know how distractions can derail even the best of intentions—especially for those living with ADHD or autism. That’s where Jeremy Nagel steps in with Focus Bear a tool designed to help people find their focus, build routines, and achieve their goals. And when it comes to healthcare providers, Dr Rav Fernando and QuantCare are changing the game by helping clinics make data-driven decisions to improve patient care and business performance. It’s all about empowering those who care for us, so they can focus on what really matters—the people. Tonight isn’t just about pitches, it’s about progress. Adele Moynihan from Bupa Ventures, alongside Tony Hood from William Buck, Joe D. from Appomate and Roberto Persivale from The Growth Drivers will bring their combined expertise to help these founders elevate their innovations to new heights. This is more than an evening event—it’s a night where visionaries gather, ideas spark, and the future of health is being built in real-time. So, why stay in when you can join a community dedicated to driving change? Meet the founders who are changing the world today so we can live better tomorrow. See you at The Commons Gipps Street—it’s time to step into the future. Desmond John Vicki Stirling https://lnkd.in/g_tGpsWW
