Every conference has its own dynamics. Every audience has its own triggers. Our job as professional speakers is to understand these dynamics and triggers. Then, provide the organizers and the audience with the best possible experience. This is the first minute of my keynote speech at the District 105 Toastmasters Annual Conference in Oman 🇴🇲 I delivered my signature speech - Everest Leadership - in Arabic and English - to more than 400 delegates. They learned. They laughed. And they virtually traveled to the Himalayas! One common feedback I received from several delegates was that they never felt the time as I spoke. This is mainly because of the stories I weaved in throughout the speech. I was delighted by how deeply engaged the audience members were. I felt they were hungry for insights and inspiration. And I was privileged to speak to them and guide them to climb their own EVEREST post my speeches. One gentleman told me, as you were speaking, I could see all my mistakes when I started my career. ”I am a NOBODY” in Dubai…this was my inner voice on 8 June at 4 p.m. The sales rep looked at me and said, “Sorry, ma’m we can’t issue you a Dubai number, you will need your husband’s Emirates ID to get a local SIM.” He wasn't being sexist; it’s just how it works here. After 21 years of building my life and career in Singapore, I took a bold leap at the age of 47 and decided to make Dubai my home. This transition has been nothing short of challenging. I am finding myself in a place where I have no control. Everything has to be relearned: where to buy a fridge, daily groceries, which apps to download, and which networking groups to join. Where do I get my hair, nails, massage? Which credit card is the best for air miles? And so on … There was a fair chance for me to fall into a rabbit hole of emotional overwhelm, feeling lost, fearful, guilty, doubtful, and even self-pity. However, guess what? I find myself seamlessly choosing a different path. Here’s how! 1️⃣ Acknowledging the Challenge: I allow myself to feel emotions rather than suppress them. I cried at the airport when saying bye to 25 of our friends and during the 7-hour plane ride. This isn't easy, but I am giving myself permission to feel. I am holding space for myself. 2️⃣ Reframing the Situation: I am reminding myself that I chose this path and how so many people would do anything to be in my position right now. This helped shift my perspective from being a victim to feeling empowered. 3️⃣ Practicing Gratitude: I thanked my stars for the support, love, and abundance in my life that's poured in from family and friends, helping us navigate small and big situations, challenges, and questions. 4️⃣ Embracing Curiosity: At 47, I see myself shifting into a childlike state of curiosity and excitement about restarting life in a new country. Last night, buying a washing machine in a mall that stays open until 11 p.m. felt like a win! The new experiences and places waiting to be embraced are exhilarating. 5️⃣ Leveraging my Past: I recognized that all I built in Singapore is not lost. I can now recreate that and more in a new location, leveraging technology to maintain authentic connections. Why Am I Sharing This? I share my story to show you that no matter what the challenge, there is a way out. I am someone who is able to access her three Cs—calm, Confidence, and Clarity—on demand in challenging situations. I feel empowered, reassured, confident and clear about what to do. When I don’t feel these things, I rely on my tools, tips, and techniques to get back on track. It seems like a big task, but I know I can and will do it. I encourage you to reflect on your challenges. How do you feel about them? Do you feel supported enough? If not, who and where can you find that support? I would love to be that support. We can discuss what’s going on, and if nothing else, in our 20 minutes together, I promise to share 2-3 self-help ideas to help you navigate through your challenges.

With fresh memories of war in Gaza & the negative perceptions in the region, I wonder if more nations want to sign peace deals with Israel at this time. End of occupation & the formation of a Palestinian State may change perceptions & minds.  In the case of #Lebanon if the conflict / ceasefire talks lead to full implementation of UN resolution 1701 & if it fosters greater national unity, creates pathway to resolve its internal challenges & reduces excessive external influence in its affairs, then it is a win. Media reports say good progress is being made in Lebanon ceasefire talks.    In the case of #Gaza, after a year long war a ceasefire is a temporary first step  followed by negotiations to end the occupation & the creation of a Palestinian state. Only then it is a win. An open mind is the qualification for creative problem solving, but at the same time an open mind is vulnerable to external interference. With truth becoming the first victim in war and with your mind becoming the target, we need to switch off or guard ourselves from getting excessively influenced by media & state propaganda. UAE Visa Amnesty 2024: A Lifeline for Thousands of Overstaying Expats The 2024 UAE visa amnesty offers a vital grace period to help thousands of illegal expatriates regularize their status. Many individuals, from various nationalities, have found themselves in dire circumstances due to unscrupulous visa providers and scammers. These individuals have been exploited, losing money to fraudulent schemes without receiving the promised visas. As a result, they have been left stranded in the UAE with expired documents, facing hefty penalties and an uncertain future. Moreover, some companies have exacerbated the situation by creating additional barriers for job seekers, leaving many without the financial resources or knowledge needed to navigate the complex visa process. This has led to an increased number of individuals overstaying their visas, unable to return to their home countries or legalize their status. Starting from September 1, 2024, the UAE government offers a much-needed opportunity for these violators to regularize their visas. This amnesty is a significant chance for all affected expatriates to rectify their legal status and secure a more stable future. We strongly urge everyone in this situation to take advantage of this opportunity and utilize this grace period to regularize their residency status in the UAE. Mubasheer Abdul Rehman.

Recently, in Al Dhannah City, I delivered a second 'Speakers Corner' workshop to another group of team leaders and managers from ADNOC Refining. During the workshop, we answered such questions as: How do I overcome speech anxiety? How do I interact with the audience? How do I deal with various audience types? How can I find the melody in my words? What register is most appropriate for my speech? How do I structure my speech? Among other things, I also stressed the importance of speaking the speech and writing for the ear, not the page. #publicspeaking #leadership

Finding a job in Dubai and Abu Dhabi has become increasingly challenging in recent years, but why? - Abundance of Talent - One of the primary reasons for the difficulty in finding a job in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is the sheer abundance of talent. For every job opening, there are now hundreds of applicants, making the competition fierce. This high level of competition means that even highly qualified candidates may find it challenging to stand out and secure a position. - Changing Nature of the Cities - Dubai and Abu Dhabi are no longer the transitory cities they once were in the 2010s. Back then, many expatriates viewed these cities as temporary stops in their careers. However, the current trend shows that more people are choosing to settle down and build a life in the UAE.
