This is so telling, Alex. Thanks for laying it out. We need to build soil health, particularly soil carbon. “Research conducted in Kenya’s western and central highlands shows that maize yields remain at two tons or lower even when 150 kg/ha of nitrogen is applied to low-potential soils (when organic carbon is less than 3 percent and the soil is acidic with a pH below 5.5). Conversely, in soils where organic carbon is higher than 3 percent, and soil pH is above 6, maize yield of up to 3.5 tons/ha can be achieved with less than 20 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer. Variations in fertilizer use and maize yield in sub-Saharan Africa are instructive. According to FAO, Uganda’s fertilizer application rate is 2.4 kg/ha, just 4 percent of Kenya’s 60 kg/ha. But Uganda produces 2.84 tons of maize per hectare, 87 percent more than Kenya’s 1.52 tons/ha. With about two-thirds of Kenya’s fertilizer application, Ethiopia produces 179 percent more maize than Kenya.” CIFOR-ICRAF

How has the need to import massive amounts of food into the Gulf resulted in an aggressive growth in gulf-backed agribusiness across Africa? What do the politics of these land grabs portend for a post-carbon future in the region? Christian Henderson explains in our latest issue: "In recent years, Gulf economies have tackled their food dependencies not just by importing foodstuffs but through land enclosures, or the purchasing of agricultural land abroad, particularly in the Middle East, North and East Africa (but also as far as the United States and Australia). They have also increasingly invested in food value chains: using their purchasing power to buy raw goods from other countries for production and export. Mainstream economic policy proposes that such trade between the Gulf states and other Arab countries is mutually beneficial. International finance institutions, like the World Bank, encourage poor countries to pursue growth by liberalizing their agricultural markets, expanding food exports and increasing foreign investment in their agribusiness sectors. They tout these policies as a way to resolve food security, rural development and trade imbalances. Amid rising concerns about the environment, policy makers also argue that such trade can resolve ecological scarcity. Countries with arable land and water can meet the food demand of countries that are not endowed with such resources. One article in The Lancet in 2014, captures this view, arguing that more amalgamation between states in the Middle East could address crucial shortages: “regional ecological integration around exchange of water, energy, food, and labour, though politically difficult to achieve, offers the best hope to improve the adaptive capacity of individual Arab nations.” But this framework fails to account for the environmental aspect of agricultural commodity production. Agricultural extraction might ensure cheaper food prices in the Gulf states, but it has an ecological cost in the growing country. Indeed, rather than a panacea, the acquisition of cheap land and water to grow raw materials for export to the Gulf fits into broader efforts of more aggressive Gulf states, like the UAE, to expand extractivist circuits into Africa. The GCC states, through agribusiness and food, thus play a role in the reproduction of peripheries in the Middle East and Africa."

Yesterday, Ministry of Agriculture unveiled the latest Crop Forecasting Survey results and ZAMACE was in attendance. Despite the challenges of El Niño and climate change, our commitment to food and nutrition security remains unwavering. Key highlights: Deficit Alert: Significant reductions in maize, rice, wheat, and cassava output.  Action Plan: President Hichilema has declared this season a national disaster, and a robust mitigation plan is in motion. Government Support: Importing 600,000+ metric tonnes of non-GMO maize and encouraging private sector participation to cover deficits. Farmer Empowerment: Expanded access to credit, inputs, and climate-smart agriculture practices. Future Plans: Launching the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Programme (CATSP) in August 2024. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a resilient agricultural sector. Oyster Agribusiness Secures $2 Million Funding to Expand Ghana Operations Oyster Agribusiness Oyster Agribusiness, a pioneering agri-tech company in climate-smart #agriculture, has secured $2 million in funding to expand its operations and support more smallholder farmers across #Ghana. The funding was raised with contributions from Root Capital, RDF Ghana, and Sahel Capital’s SEFAA Fund, with Pangea Africa Limited leading the process as a key #business development partner. Over the past five years, Oyster Agribusiness has had a transformative impact on Ghana’s agricultural sector by: Distributing GH¢60 million ($3.8 million) to smallholder #farmers. Positively affecting 4,500 farmers. Cultivating over 20,000 acres. Supplying 25,000 tons of produce to local and international #markets. The new funding will help Oyster scale its climate-smart initiatives and expand its reach, building resilience within Ghana’s #agriculture sector in the face of #climate challenges. CEO Edmond Kombat expressed his excitement about the investment, saying, “With support from Root Capital, RDF Ghana, Sahel Capital, and Pangea Africa, we are set to accelerate our mission.
