Cancer care is evolving and improving in the Gulf region, but knowledge surrounding different types of cancer can vary. One of the lesser-known cancers – or less spoken about, if you will – is lymphoma, a blood cancer that targets lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell that’s crucial in fighting infections). Signs and symptoms can be vague, and global data indicates that it can often be mistaken for other less serious illnesses. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺, 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟰 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟱 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮 (𝗡𝗛𝗟).   Today’s World Lymphoma Day (#WLD) – now in its 20th year – is dedicated to raising awareness around this condition.   In the Gulf Cluster, we have the honour of interacting with some brilliant governmental and non governmental institutions doing great work in the field to improve patient outcomes for all.   This year’s WLD stresses the need for holistic care. It means taking care of the mental and emotional health aspect of cancer in addition to the physical.   We need to work on emphasising the connection between physical health, emotional wellbeing, mental health, and social factors, recognising that all of these elements contribute to a patient’s overall outcomes.   #WLAD #WLAD2024 #DoingNowWhatPatientsNeedNext

As vendors to Novartis Saudi Arabia | نوفارتس السعودية and IQVIA Middle East and Africa, we are happy to share the findings of our #RWE study with the medical community. This study was led by Dr. Ibrahim Al-Homod, MD,FACP, consultant internal medicine, esteemed Rheumatologist and Chairman of the postgraduate department at King Fahad Medical City - KFMC. We determined the “treatment retention rate” to check the percentage of patients who continued to use the drug over 6 and 12 months. The percentage of treatment retention after 6 months was 100%. Considering the patients who started secukinumab 12 months or more prior to the study cutoff date (December 2022), the 12-month retention rate was 85%. DAPSA score showed a statistically significant decrease among those who received secukinumab alone by approximately 20.9 and 21.4 (p values < 0.001 for each) compared to 23.7 and 25.9 in combination with MTX (p-value = 0.012 & 0.006, respectively) after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively, compared to the baseline. read more (link in the comments)!

In 2022, women in the Middle East and North Africa made up 19% of the labor force, one of the lowest percentages globally, according to the World Bank. Although there is an 88% female literacy rate in the ME, 42% of Arab women are unemployed. While these numbers might be shocking, I firmly believe that women in decision-making roles hold the power to challenge this reality, establish new norms and pave the way for a brighter future. I had the opportunity to share my opinion on the employment gap in the region and how to address it at MENA Women Leaders' Summit in Riyadh recently. Encouraging women to join the workforce in the region starts with understanding the challenges they face. I know that I personally struggled as a working mother to balance family and work. Moreover, the more I took on responsibilities at work and rose in the ranks, the more I had to fight against the stereotypical image of a male leader. Fortunately, I learned key lessons along my journey, that I would like to share with all the women who doubt themselves, their professional capacities, and even their ability to make a difference in the professional landscape. - Challenge the status quo and find your purpose, then choose the career that will allow you to fulfill your purpose, not what you think will please others. - Find the right work culture that will meet your evolving needs. - As an employer, cultivate and create the right conditions that help your employees thrive. - Be a leader that makes a change. Get inspired from your own experiences, knowledge and vision. With more women and women-friendly leaders in the Middle East, a whole population will have more opportunities to join the workforce, which could lead to an addition of 2.7 Trillion $ to the regional economy by 2025! So let’s make sure we provide an inclusive, welcoming and supportive environment so everyone can feel confident and encouraged to work, innovate and participate in the betterment of society. #WomenLeadersSummit2024 #WomenEmpowerment

Last week I moderated a panel discussion on Atopic Dermatitis as part of the launch of the second edition of "أخرج للدنيا" or ‘Get out to the world’ awareness campaign. Joined by leading experts like Dr. Hayam Nazif, Vice President of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, Dr. Assem Farag, Professor of Dermatology and President of the Egyptian Society of Dermatology and Sharm Derma, and Dr. Amin Sharobim, MD of Dermatology at the National Research Center, we explored the medical and psychological impacts of this chronic skin condition on patients and their families. Atopic Dermatitis, also known as eczema, can have a significant effect on quality of life, causing uncomfortable symptoms like intense itching and dry, irritated skin. Yet many people still lack understanding about this disease. Through " أخرج للدنيا" campaign, we aim to increase public awareness about Atopic Dermatitis, emphasize on the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment, provide support and resources for patients and help them live normally. “To know the road ahead, ask those returning” is a Chinese proverb that I believe deserves reflecting on because: 🛣 You need to be curious about the road ahead to be successful. ❔ You need to always “ask”. Asking the right questions is step one in development, asking for feedback is at the core of development. 🤝 Knowing who to ask is crucial and that’s why networking and connecting with people is becoming a fundamental need for professionals across the globe. And that’s why I am dedicating this post to tell you about a new emerging and interesting platform Mindful Talks! This podcast was founded by my old colleague and respected friend Yara El Sayed and she is building it in a way that enables almost all the success principles above!  Her trigger to actually start the platform is in itself impressive: to give back! She wanted to give back to the community by helping them learn and grow. And to me this is how great ideas should start. Some people asked me to share my thoughts on the book #crossroads from Hicham Naim Pharm D MBA after posting I was going to read it; so here it is. A highly recommended read! One thing I know, I know nothing. That saying from Socrates I think, is becoming an even bigger truth when it comes to the impact of technology, discovery and all the things elaborated in this book. With the speed of development and the increase of its impact it is not only interesting but wise to invest time reading this book. - To be educated: It is eye opening to read technology after development after breakthrough in so many different fields. - To dream: when looking at what might be when all of this will be used for its most noble purpose. - To be warned: of the dangers of many of these technologies when they fall in the wrong hands. Which they will. In summary thus: to prepare, intellectually, practically and mainly ethically. Since that remains most with me after having closed this very readable book. With an explosion of options and singularity around the corner; what do we want as a society? Especially knowing the world is so divided? How can we ensure that all this contributes to a brighter future as indicated on the cover, and will not lead to a dystopian nightmare? That we avoid wars being fought through viruses and nanotechnology to obtain access to breakthroughs that only strengthen bad intent. Very political questions we can have an impact on through the way we vote. Just like every glass of tap water and act of kindness will be a bridge to a better future. I am in, hope you too!

Huge shoutout to the Department of Health Abu Dhabi for the success of the Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week. This conference has truly set a new benchmark as a pivotal healthcare gathering in the region. The array of topics discussed was timely and thought-provoking, posing a collective challenge to us all in shaping the future of healthcare. AI plays an inevitable role in that future, and the panel on 'Accelerating Scientific Breakthroughs: AI's Potential in R&D,' in which I participated, delved into the crucial aspects of how AI is transforming healthcare. It was an honor to exchange ideas with esteemed digital technology experts and healthcare leaders. During our session, I had the opportunity to share Sanofi’s industry-leading efforts in AI. "How do you assess the novelty of AI-generated output, and what criteria define a breakthrough?" I was asked. The potential of AI to revolutionize healthcare, especially in R&D, is immense. Everyone on the panel agreed that the exciting journey has just begun.
