🌍 Enhancing Payment Flexibility with Request to Pay (R2P): A Deeper Dive into Four Key Channels 🌍 In my previous post, I discussed how Request to Pay (R2P) via USSD and GHQR can bridge the gap in Ghana’s financial ecosystem, driving interoperability and creating seamless payment experiences. Today, I’d like to expand on this by exploring the four main channels that can power R2P: USSD, Mobile Apps of Banks, Fintech Apps, and POS. What Makes Request to Pay Unique? Unlike traditional payment methods, Request to Pay allows for greater control over how and when payments are made. Whether it’s an individual paying for a service or a business collecting fees, R2P ensures that payments are initiated in a structured, secure, and customer-driven way—across all key platforms. Four Key Channels for R2P, in todays post we will focus on two. Mobile Apps and POS 1. Mobile Apps of Banks Customers can also initiate or approve Request to Pay transactions directly from their bank’s mobile app. When they receive a payment request, they can review all pending transactions and approve the one they choose, paying from either their Bank Account or Mobile Wallet. This creates a seamless and secure payment experience within a familiar platform. Fintechs play a key role in driving digital financial services, and with Request to Pay integration, they can enhance their value proposition. Users of fintech apps can navigate to the Request to Pay section, see all pending payment requests, and approve transactions from either their Bank Account or Mobile Wallet. This channel opens up new possibilities for fintechs to offer secure and flexible payment options. 2. POS (Point of Sale) Systems Retailers and service providers using POS systems can now leverage R2P to initiate payments in-store. After scanning a GHQR code, the customer receives a payment request, which can be approved via Mobile Wallet or Bank Account. This creates a unified experience for both in-store and digital transactions, allowing businesses to cater to all types of customers—whether they’re paying in cash, mobile money, or bank transfers. Benefits to Citizens For consumers, R2P across these four channels offers unparalleled payment flexibility. No matter the platform—USSD, mobile apps, or POS—users can choose the payment method that works best for them. With no need to switch between apps or manually input details, Request to Pay simplifies transactions and ensures a smooth, error-free experience. Banks and fintechs gain access to a more connected ecosystem through R2P integration across all channels. 🚀This is about 15 years back, when I was a part of GCC and was given the opportunity to lead a team of about 15. In a span of about 2 years the team grew to about 60, being managed by about 6 teams leads, supporting the business across the globe 24 by 7. 💼During one of the reviews with the key stakeholder, where I was presenting and we came on a slide titled people, he stopped, and pointed his laser on a small section of that slide, that indicated that the attrition of my direct reports was zero in last 2 years. He was really pleased with that and said," I really don’t even want to look at the rest of this slide, since if you are managing your direct reports so well, am sure we all we move forward very well" 💡At that point in time, I need not realize the importance of this. But now 20 years down the line and being in leadership positions, it resonates. 💡People are your key resources and without them you are no one. If you take care of your people, they will take care of you. 🌱Some of the key traits for people management that we all should follow. ·        Listen actively. ·        Have Empathy ·        Look for growth for your people ·        Trust them to do their thing ·        Guide them, provide them direction ·        Support them when they are down ·        Celebrate their wins ·        Be authentic with ·        Be first among equals with them 🌟These principles have guided me throughout my journey, leading to stronger teams, higher retention rates, and a thriving organizational culture. A unified payments platform like UPI or a similar initiative could be a game-changer for the region's digital payments landscape. 1. Cost Efficiency: A unified payments platform like UPI can significantly reduce operational and infrastructure costs by simplifying payments under a single system rather than maintaining multiple apps and interfaces like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Pay+ etc 2. Workforce Optimization: Instead of managing separate teams and resources for each payment platform, UPI’s single system would streamline workforce management, allowing banks to allocate resources more effectively and focus on innovation. 3. Enhanced Scalability: UPI’s proven scalability, handling over 10 billion transactions monthly, can offer GCC the ability to expand its digital payment ecosystem rapidly and efficiently. 4. Seamless Customer Experience: UPI’s interoperability allows customers to make payments across platforms without friction. Adopting a similar system in GCC would provide users with a more consistent, reliable experience, regardless of their preferred device or payment method. 5. Financial Inclusion & Seamless Payments: UPI has democratized payments in India by allowing users to transact using mobile apps. In the Middle East, platforms like UAE's FAB Payit and Dubai Islamic Bank’s digital wallet are leading the digital payment space. UPI can accelerate this shift, especially for small businesses. 6. Cross-Border Remittances: With millions of Indian expats in the GCC, UPI can revolutionize remittance processes. i.e, collaboration with Mashreq Bank or Al Ansari Exchange can streamline faster, low-cost transfers between India and the UAE. 7. Supporting Cashless Economies: Vision 2021, Vision 2030 and Vision 2040 are pushing towards cashless societies.
