Saudi Arabia: The New Regional Headquarters for Pladis’ Expansion in the MENAI Region UK-based snacking giant Pladis Global, the manufacturer behind iconic brands such as McVitie’s, Godiva Chocolatier, Jacob’s, and Carr’s, has opened a new regional headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This new hub will serve as the main office for its operations covering the Middle East, North Africa, and India (MENAI) region, marking a significant milestone in its strategic expansion. Chairman Murat Ülker officially inaugurated the new headquarters, underscoring the company’s commitment to its growth in the region. The Managing Director for the MENAI region at Pladis emphasized the importance of this move, stating: “The opening of our new headquarters in Jeddah is a pivotal step in our journey towards strengthening our presence in the region. This office embodies our commitment to investing in our people and business, providing a modern, collaborative space to drive innovation and growth across our operations. As we expand, this new office will serve as the cornerstone of our regional strategy, enabling us to serve our customers and communities better.” Pladis, owned by the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding, produces a wide range of sweet and savory biscuits, cakes, wafers, and chocolates, including the famous Jaffa Cakes. Saudi Arabia’s Almarai - المراعي Company has announced that its subsidiary, Teeba Investment for Developed Food Processing Company, has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Jordan’s Hammoudeh Food Industries for 263 million Saudi riyals ($70 million). The acquisition of the 50-year-old dairy and cheese business is intended to strengthen Almarai’s market position in Jordan and aligns with its long-term strategy to sustain growth in key markets and regions. Almarai stated that the acquisition will enhance its ability to expand its operations and product offerings in Jordan. The company aims to leverage operational efficiencies in the country to drive sales growth and profitability. The deal will be financed through Almarai’s internal cash flows and remains subject to regulatory approvals and certain contractual conditions. In its latest financial update, Almarai reported a net profit of SAR 570.45 million for Q3 2024, marking an increase from SAR 486.26 million during the same period last year. For the first nine months of 2024, the company’s net profit rose to SAR 1.88 billion, up from SAR 1.67 billion in the same period of the previous year. Rising Sales of Packaged Foods 🍩 🍱 Exciting developments in the packaged foods market in the GCC region! The increasing pace of life among the working population and a rise in tourist numbers are driving dynamic growth. Convenience foods like canned, frozen, ready-to-eat, and chilled products are highly sought after for their longer shelf life and easy preparation. Consumers benefit from detailed ingredient lists and nutritional information, empowering them to make informed choices. In 2015, the UAE's packaged food sales market hit US$4.3 billion, with a solid CAGR of 8.2% from 2010. Dairy products, baked goods, and rice/pasta/noodles were top sellers, while sweet and savory snacks, confectioneries, and spreads showed rapid growth. Looking forward, the UAE's retail sales value is forecasted to grow at 5.5% annually, reaching US$5.6 billion by 2020. One reason, if only one, to act promptly when war arises. It's easier to control a bushfire before it spreads! Let us not be fooled by economists who claim that oil price is stable hence the war in the Near East is raging with neighbors is not a major risk for the global economy. The war in the Near East has become the single most important risk event for global and regional economy in recent months and the biggest crisis of our generation is at our doorstep. 60% of the oil comes from the region. And it is home to close to 400Mn people. The War is the biggest risk for three reasons at least: 1. There is no end in sight. Global Crisis are not only defined by the way they start, but most importantly how they can end. In fact, look at most global crisis, the way they start is not materially important in the end. Whether Covid started in Wuhan or in another Lab will not change the fact that it pushed more than 100 million into poverty globally and caused tens of thousands of fatalities. We are at the brink of a chain of events that goes out of control... 2. The shock of wars is very long and destructive in nature. It takes decades to rebuild after a war of the amplitude of the one in Palestine and Lebanon today. And it changes the economy of the whole region for an entire generation. One of the most obvious impacts of wars and yet difficult to map through modern economic tools, is the movement of populations. Millions have already moved out from the region, from all countries involved in the war, and millions more will move in the months to come. And similarly, capital flight has started and will continue. Below radar in the beginning, and more and more obviously as events unfold. 3. The cement of any economic success is Trust. If economic players lose trust into their political leaders, the global world order, the UN institutions, the international treaties, then economies enter into a state of instability that increases the risks of systemic failure. No matter how attractive your programs or economic plans are, they end up attracting no investor since the region is generally considered too instable. I have seen pictures of flights being continued in some countries hence the message that peace and stability is ensured in such countries. Foolish. It takes minutes and a single missile to stop flights in a country. Africa is full of opportunities but remains generally avoided by global capital because there is no trust in polities, governance and political leadership. Middle East will follow if we don't stop the madness of war. It is also quite about time economists define what the way out of war looks like now. Reconstruction, New trade corridors (trade is the best cement of peace), New definition of political treaties, enhanced regional institutions to balance the loss of steam of international ones... And from business perspective, it is time also to gear efforts towards building resilience and strong regional supply chains.
