One of the privileges of putting people development at the core of our strategy and having been active in the market since 2009 is M/HQ X Re/think's vast and dynamic alumni network. It’s that time of year—budgets are being finalised and plans are underway. But imagine trying to create a budget with no idea how much inflation will hit, speculating anywhere between 10% to 40% based on previous years, and knowing the odds of another cyclone devastating Malawi are extremely high, with over a 60% chance each year. Now, picture living in the Middle East, wondering if donors will continue to support Africa when crises are unfolding so much closer to home—in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. How many more fundraising events can we squeeze in to make sure we have a Plan B? How many corporate partners have committed to more than one year, so we can plan long-term? These are the impossible questions charities face when relying on public donations. As a charity leader, I'm constantly balancing uncertainty and the reality that sustainable income streams are the key to survival. Some days, I feel like a glorified beggar, hoping I haven’t forgotten to wish a key donor happy birthday or that no one wakes up deciding they no longer want to support Sparkle. And when that happens, I’m faced with telling children, “Sorry, we can’t provide the extra meal we promised.” Yes, budgeting is tough for businesses across the board right now. But not every company has to look a child in the eyes and tell them their basic needs won’t be met because donor support has dried up. Huge thanks to Gregory Shippee at Re/think and his team for coming into the office to help us navigate this complexity. Sustainable income, not reliance on donations, is the future.
