The Guardian has received five shortlist nominations for the 2013 Data Journalism Awards - the only international prize exclusively for data-driven journalism.
The Guardian nominations were for:
• Guardian Data
• Guardian Data's Olympics coverage
• Guardian US interactive team guide to gay rights
• Guide to US food aid
• Special report on migrant money
There were also strong showings from Propublica, the BBC and the Texas Tribune. Argentina's innovative La Nacion data site also received two shortlisted entries.
There were over 300 entries, 72 of which made the final shortlist. 53 organisations from around the world saw their entries shortlisted, with US accounting for 18 of those. The UK was second, with 7.
The shortlist was chosen by Nicolas Kayser-Brill, Data-Journalist and CEO of J++; Brian Boyer, News Application Editor at NPR; Bertrand Pecquerie, CEO of the Global Editors Network; and Antoine Laurent, GEN Deputy Director and Director of the Data Journalism Awards.
The next stage is for the entries to be judged by the DJA jury, which includes me. However, where Guardian entries are shortlisted, I will not be taking part in the judging process, which also goes for other judges who have seen their projects shortlisted.
